Caregivers’ Health Can Suffer When Juggling Multiple Chores
Middle-aged adults who regularly help their elderly parents experience a drop in health as well as well-being in their posses lives, a new study reports. The study found these adult children were often juggling multiple roles each day, which sometimes caused conflicts in roles or left them feeling overloaded.
A Virginia Tech research team studied diaries of individuals who provided help to parents, with more than half assisting two or more days per week, according to a Health Day article. The study was published in Journal of Gerontology: Social Sciences.
“The accumulation of small as well as large daily stressors, such as work deadlines, PTA meetings, supporting family as well as friends, as well as providing routine assistance to a parent living outside one’s house can build up,” said study leader Jyoti Savla, assistant professor of human development as well as gerontology. “Sooner or later, they can spill over into other areas of life with negative mental as well as physical consequences. Days when help is provided to parents are more stressful than days when it is not.”
Researchers found several factors, such as having a spouse as well as higher education, could decrease the conflict. Those who trusted in personal growth, mastery as well as self acceptance also experienced fewer negative consequences.
